Saturday, 23 August 2008 |
Newcastle Jets showed their Championship credentials fighting back to earn a 3-3 draw against Perth Glory in Friday’s A-League clash at Member Equity Stadium. Deep into photo Perth Glory | second half injury time the home side led 3-2, but former Glory defender Jade North popped up to fire home in the 94th minute to earn Gary Van Egmond’s side a point. It was even opening to the game, the first chance falling to Jets new Ecuadorian striker Edmundo Zura, who fired into the side netting on three minutes. The Glory’s new imports were involved in their first opportunity, former Sorrento midfielder Scott Bulloch found Mark Lee on the left, his cross was nodded back by Eugene Dadi and Argentinean striker Adrian Trinidad’s volley was saved by Ante Covic. It was a good start to the game but an error from the officials handed the Jets the lead on 20 minutes, Joel Griffiths was sent clear down the right hand channel and he was bought down by Dino Djulbic outside the area but referee Craig Zetter pointed to the spot. Perth Glory MATCH REPORT Sunday, 17 August 2008 A new look Perth Glory outfit may have come away empty handed from their cross border raid against Adelaide in round one but the WA side’s spirited display points to plenty of positives with the season in its infancy. A wonder strike from Adelaide skipper Travis Dodd just before half time was the only thing that separated the two sides with Perth having their fair share of possession throughout the contest. No fewer than six players were handed their Hyundai A-League debuts for Glory with off-season recruits Frank Juric, Hayden Doyle, Amaral, Adriano Pellegrino, Scott Bulloch and Eugene Dadi all making Dave Mitchell’s starting eleven. Attacking midfielder Adrian Trinidad was a late withdrawal after failing a fitness test, while injury also ruled out the tenacious James Robinson. On a positive note, key defender David Tarka played his first full game in the Hyundai A-League in more than a year following a long term injury and looked solid at centre-half. “I’ve pulled up well and it was nice to be back out there with the lads,” Tarka said from the change rooms.

Outstanding West Australian defender Jamie Coyne will proudly lead Perth Glory this season after being announced as Captain at the club’s 2008/09 Hyundai A-League season launch on Thursday night. Coyne joined the Glory in 2002 and has played 89 matches including the 2003/04 NSL Championship winning side. After a season in Holland with Den Haag he returned to Perth for the start of the Hyundai A-League and has been one of the club’s most consistent performers. The athletic defender had a stellar 2007/08 season resulting in a call-up to the Socceroos training camp. Out of contract and in demand, Coyne chose to extend his stay in Perth for a further two years, rejecting the approaches of several rival clubs eager to secure his signature.
